La pens\u00e9e d\u2019un plat se trouve dans l\u2019assiette. Pour la rencontrer, il faut s\u2019attabler et le go\u00fbter. Nulle autre connaissance n\u2019en permet la d\u00e9couverte. Pas m\u00eame les mots du chef. La peinture, comme la cuisine, assemble des mati\u00e8res pour un face\u2011\u00e0\u2011face, un corps en regard.<\/em>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La qu\u00eate de sens et la recherche de l\u2019entendement justifient nombre d\u2019essais sur la peinture. La plupart pourraient se contenter \u2014 comme s\u2019il s\u2019agissait d\u2019images \u2014 de cartes postales pour l\u2019\u00e9tudier. La peinture n\u2019est pourtant pas affaire d\u2019image. L\u2019image rel\u00e8ve de la compr\u00e9hension, la peinture non. Immanente \u00e0 la mati\u00e8re, elle n\u2019a pas ou n\u2019est pas \u00e0 voir avec la raison. Sa pens\u00e9e propre se forme loin des sujets qu\u2019elle concourt \u00e0 mettre \u00e0 jour dans les compositions qu\u2019elle produit. Elle se vit, inimaginable, hors de l\u2019image. Le propos ou le projet d\u2019une peinture \u00e9chappe \u00e0 sa condition m\u00eame. Les images qui nous permettent d\u2019en saisir divers degr\u00e9s de complexit\u00e9 n\u2019aident pas \u00e0 la d\u00e9finir. Elle les partage avec d\u2019autres m\u00e9diums et d\u2019autres disciplines. Lib\u00e9r\u00e9e de l\u2019image, sans propos ni projets, la peinture s\u2019ouvre \u00e0 sa forme en silence. On ne peut rien dire qui en accr\u00e9dite la pr\u00e9sence. Poser le mot devant la peinture c\u2019est comme placer un miroir devant un son. En mesure de le diriger, il ne le refl\u00e8te pas. La peinture \u2014 sa pens\u00e9e \u00e9galement \u2014 ne tient pas d\u2019une id\u00e9e et ne se recherche pas. On la touche quand elle nous touche, sans r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fundamental idea behind a meal is found on a plate. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to fully experience it, you must sit down to eat.There is no other way to experience taste. Even an explanation from the chef would fall short. Painting, <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

much like cooking, assembles materials for confrontation\u200a; a body in view. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The search for meaning and understanding of painting are the focus of many texts and essays on this medium. The vast majority would content themselves with postcards to study them with \u2014 as if they were pictures. Painting is not, however, an affair with images. Images bring us to a certain understanding, painting, does not. Inherently material, painting should not be contemplated with logic or reason. The thought behind a painting comes from far beyond the subject matter brought to light in a given composition. It is projected, unimaginably, outside of the frame. The motive or purpouse of a painting escapes its very condition. The images that allow us to percieve varying degrees of complexity do not help at all with a definition. That is shared between other mediums and disciplines. Liberated from images, with no specific purpose or mission, painting opens itself to form in silence. Nothing can be said to give credence to its presence. Putting a word in front of a painting is like placing a mirror in front of sound. If positioned to be projected, no reflection is produced. Painting \u2014 as well as its thought process \u2014 does not stem from an idea it can not be researched. One touches on it when one is touched by it, without thinking twice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
