Mental images, made of intellectual intuitions and unarticulated presentiments I divine, however, not just as surface things, but as possessing a depth at once sensory and conceptual. Is this an admission of failure? Probably. I’ve come to prefer the silence that these works create inside me, a kind of exhilarating lack. Something I have trouble accessing, something no sooner given than taken away: precisely what Vincent Dulom’s painting achieves and its way of achieving it. Everything is there, nothing is there; I see everything, I see nothing; I understand everything, I understand nothing.

What’s more, the texts have to be critical, i.e. (to go back up the etymological trail) texts that “sort”, that “sieve”. And Vincent Dulom’s painting is a sieve. It pulverises its pigmentary particl s, then pulls them back together again, magnetically, as they seem to take an abruptly narrowed path and inflate a flow become almost visible. Should I have to produce analytical texts, accompanying the breakdown (“analysis” in classical Greek) of this notion in order to isolate its components, whether coloured or ideal? This mode of painting being its own critique, its own analysis, I need only blow on this powdery substance to briefly raise various interpretations the painting could have placed in my path.

And thus to signal, perhaps, that in spite of all this, Vincent Dulom’s painting eludes tautology. And furthermore, never focuses on itself, despite the vibratile surface it creates. Transcending the regard interdit (“forbidden gaze”)1, it is what triggers the spectators’ search for a stance (as also with regard to the political and the existential), but one they find themselves constantly obliged to change. We’re not gazing at ourselves in Dulom’s painting, even though it so markedly raises the issue of the point of view. We’re gazing at the universe offered to us in its physical form. A cloud of elementary particles, a few star clusters and a great deal of void.

Respiratory hieroglyphics2

One day a mutual friend3 with whom Dulom and I were exchanging fragments from our reading, sent me, in one of her frequent text messages, a quotation from the famous French mathematician, physicist, philosopher and engineer Henri Poincaré (1854–1912): “Every event is a mist of droplets.” I’ve never tracked this neat dictum back to its source – to be honest, I hardly tried: its meteorological poetry was all I needed. On the other hand, it was on my mind from the beginning of the preparations for Percée. Just as Dulom’s works have, in my opinion, their rightful place in a history of Western (i.e., religious) art, while absolutely rejecting any suggestion of a symbolic dimension (everyone, obviously, remains free to see one) and blossoming in a modest, thoroughly oriental quietude. The artists’ clouds, abstract though they may be, have about them something of the clouds for which the French philosopher and art historian Hubert Damisch (1928–2017) formulated an incomparable theory in 1972.4 Signs serving simultaneously as punctuation marks – breathing spaces – and elements of a broader syntactic structure. No, not a structure, I’m getting it wrong: in actual fact Damisch speaks of painting’s “syntactic space”. In this “art of the surface”, with everything taking place within the area or, conversely, the frame of a window, in what cinema jargon calls a “background set”, Percée deploys a rich semiotic palette.

But while fogs and halos are contributing to the same atmospheric perspective, they do not give rise to continuous images or to any simple illusion of depth; rather they accommodate the intrusion of this powdering into the viewer’s actual space-time, in front of the painting. Colour diffuses beyond the edges of the canvas or the sheet of paper; and when it seems to be concentrated at its core, it detaches itself, floating above the support and remaining attached to the field of vision, colliding and pulling back like those blind patches of luminosity we call retinal persistences.

Patches of Sunlight, or of Shadow

As in the title of this remarkable collection of notes5 by the Swiss poet and writer – and translator, and literary critic – Philippe Jaccottet (b. 1925). Because I know that Vincent Dulom also reads the author of Obscurity (1961), Under Clouded Skies (1983), Seedtime (1984) and more recently A Calm Fire (2007). For me these “patches of sunlight” leading to dimness were also the heat-gorged bodies – not to say “solar anuses”6 – evoked by French writer Georges Bataille (1897–1962) in his hilarious Story of the Eye.7 I saw them as marking the incarnation, the incarnadine, in painting whose volatility testifies to the physical and not only (not necessarily) to the spiritual and the religious; as simultaneously pointing up, like a lattice of light striking the floor of a consecrated building, the divine and the sweetness of the day – all those straining bodies in the endless torture and ecstasy of Western religious painting.

In my opinion Dulom would turn down that particular patch of sunlight. He wouldn’t much appreciate the reference to Bataille, but neither would he, on the contrary, deny the profoundly corporeal dimension of his own painting, in both the mobile choreography it imposes on the viewer and the sensual images these warm-toned halos, discovered in the half-light, can call up: memories of the novels of French Nobel Prize-winner Claude Simon (1913–2005) or of Woman of the Dunes, by the Japanese novelist, screenwriter and playwright Kôbô Abe (1924–1993).

Same period, same harsh, wounding sex scenes, same dizzying narrative circularity, sand and grass abrading bodies, endless starting-over: these sensations like a relentless ray of sunlight, sensations you can hardly foil by shading your eyes with your hand. A bit like having to negotiate with Dulom’s painting, which asserts itself then disappears. And which, paradoxically, like Max Milner’s shadow, is not the opposite of the visible, but its obverse.

The Silent Transformations8

This is painting as revelation, in all the ambiguity of a term expressive of the removal of the veil while also intimating its reinstatement, maybe even reversed and revealing the side that had been uncovered when it was removed. When the Latin velare, to veil, was given the prefix re-, the implication was both removal and reiteration. This would make revealing the equivalent of re-veiling. And it’s true that the veil is perhaps not concealment, or even blur, but the filter through which everything is visually resituated on the same plane, the same surface, and is thus to be seen in the same space-time – in a more or less close weave.

In this (and other) respects Dulom’s painting fits with the “image-phenomenon” specific to the arts of Asia, as described by the French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien (b. 1951).9 It interacts in particular with Chinese painting, which also makes shadow an enhancer in the same way as its hymning by the Japanese writer JunichiroTanizaki (1886–1965) in a book whose fame lives on.10 (Let us not forget that in Western culture dimness acts as a trigger for the scopic impulse, for a desire for vision and thus for knowledge, the two notions being – unfortunately – closely linked from Greco-Roman antiquity to the Enlightenment and beyond. In any case there would be no emergence without darkness, no event without a saturated horizon. But Dulom’s painting truly is an emergence. Muted, played down, but an emergence. Then again, no: it is the mist and the emergence obeying one and the same impetus. Unless the impetus is that of the viewers’ bodies in search of the right point of view – which fortunately does not exist.

Low profile, fluidity, infinite powdering – Vincent Dulom shakes us off. Whether making play with their edges or refraining from doing so, his paintings offer themselves then flee, like waves. Everything here is interconnected. It seems impossible to distinguish top from bottom, and thus before from after; the pigment particles become space-time particles, past present and future forming a single matter- continuum, and on this fleeing wave of which everything is visible but nothing can be distinguished, earth and sky meet.

Marie Cantos, artistic director L’ahah,

January 2019

1 Max Milner, On est prié de fermer les yeux.
